In May 2007, Lower Meadows was awarded Gold under the prestigious Green Tourism Business Scheme, in recognition for its commitment to the environment.

Green Tourism Business Scheme

The Green Tourism Business Scheme is the leading  environmental accreditation body operating within tourism in the UK. Green Tourism and Sustainable Tourism are used to express best environmental practice by businesses, like Lower Meadows, that are committed to minimising their effect on the environment.

Membership of the Scheme involves being rigorously assessed by registered Environmental Auditors with experience in the tourism industry. Each business is graded against over 100 measures of best practice that reflect a balance of environmental, economic and social issues. These include good management and communication, efficient lighting and heating, nature conservation, use of local crafts and local produce, renewable energy and community support and involvement.
